I received a T4 that shows my total earnings and deductions but I also got a Releve 1 which shows only the Quebec portion. I'm trying to use a tax program but can't figure out how it's supposed to be done. Do I need to file separately to Ont and Que?|||You file in your province of residence on Dec 31. It can be a bit of a pain, you might want to go to somebody like H&R Block.

It sounds like you had one employer (thus one T4), but worked part of the year in Quebec? If your T4 includes ALL your deductions (Federal and Provincial), and you lived in ONT on Dec 31, you simply file one federal return.

IIf your T4 shows only the federal and Ontario tax (it's one number called 'Income Tax), and the Releve shows the rest that was deducted, you can include simple file using BOTH tax forms to show tax deducted. Again, f you live in Ontario.

If your residence was Quebec on Dec 31, you file both a Federal and Provincial return, as a Quebec resident. There s a provision for a from that allow you to transfer tax (used to be 55% of tax collected, that may have changed) from your Federal T4 to Quebec, to avoid having a large bill with Quebec and a large refund from Ottawa. Nevertheless, you'll probably owe in Quebec, so you might want to file your Federal return first, get the refund, then file in Quebec
