I'm sure everyone is meant to but no one lets you in. Most people seem happy to make one really long que, not two short ones. I'm sure I'm right but how can so many be wrong?|||You should use both lanes then merge in turn rather than make one queue. Drivers who are not very good just sit in one line and lorry drivers brake the law by stopping cars who want to use both lanes.

Most people do not follow the highway code.

However you may risk confrontation with the numpties who won't let you in!|||Unfortunately although the pinch down to less lanes is signed a long way off there are always some drivers who see it as an opportunity to overtake and avoid a queue by going to the front of the lane that is being closed off.
If everyone were to stay in their lanes and not swap around to try to gain an advantage then merge in turn at the point where the lane closes it would work. That does not happen though -should but just does not. Most drivers will be courteous and get into the open lane early and form an orderly queue. I guess that is a British queueing thing.
The traffic will always come to a halt somewhere and that is when the chancers go for it. Some even pull out of the queue to head down the closing lane and then expect someone to let them in at the front who may have sat in the queue for several minutes. Often these people will be driving a BMW or similar German "Executive" saloon. Some people do obviously make a genuine mistake but that could only be down to not seeing the signs! Most regular motorway users will decide that they are all queue jumpers and avoid letting them in whenever possible. They get in eventually when a non regular motorway user comes to the front of the open lane.

As a lorry driver, I have had the advantage due to the height of the cab to watch this all going on many many times. I am also happy to sat that I have participated in lorry rolling roadblocks to prevent BMW man and Audi man and Merc man getting far up the closed lane. Why? Because it slows everyone down in the end if the cars at the front coming into the open lane have to keep stopping and starting to let them in. There is quite some satisfaction in seeing a BMW with all its light on including the illegal front fogs weaving side to side trying to intimidate a 44 tonne artic.

So dear asker you are not really wrong but convention, apart for German car man, says we start the queue early as if German car man is the one that is supposed to let you in his built in lack of ability to allow himself to be overtaken (which he will do at all costs) means he won't.

(apologies to all the courteous german car drivers and sorry for leaving out the others who do not drive German cars but still do this - if it makes you feel better give me a thumbs down as I could not care less if you do)|||if the traffic is flowing you should merge before, if the traffic is stationary you should 'zip' merge.
it is people in lorries etc who block the outside lane when traffic is stationary who are arrogant, who the bloody hell appointed them as traffic wardens?

On many road works (in the uk) they place a yellow sign stating 'use both lanes' or 'when queing use both lanes'.
Some arrogant people who dont know the law stilll think they should appoint themselves as 'traffic managment' despite these big yellow signs.|||The intention is that vehicles "merge in turn" as the lane disappears, or as it's neatly put elsewhere "zip merge" (like the teeth on a zipper). However, the British tradition is to queue politely and those who have got the warning and moved into the continuing lane in good time often resent those who are seen as queue-jumping and pushing their way to the front.

There's no official, legal rule about this, the idea is "you've been warned, sort yourselves out".|||I totally agree with Drew and you'll see me in the outside lane of the M73 up to the A80 at Mollinsburn most mornings preventing overtakers. I work to a nightshift schedule and so cannot make my journey any earlier, unlike most of the car drivers who cannot get out of their beds in the morning.

Have a nice day because hopefully I'll be home in bed.|||the signs leading up to it sayroad narrowing 800yrds 600yrd etc this is to warn you to move over in time to ease the flow of traffic
then some numpty's think they can go right to the end of the line and push in this causes more traffic conjestion and actually slows the flow of traffic
some wagon drivers and van drivers rightly so sit in the outside lane and stop the traffic behind then and then move over at the last minute and they let each other in
this is a good practice and stops the knobs who think they don't have to que with the rest of us cutting in
simples|||I think those who go to the end then try to force their way in are arrogant, get out of my way sorts,,, so I try to stop them if I can ,, My view is they should move a quarter mile back or so as one lane through the road works is always quicker than stop start caused by merging at last minute ,, Be polite ,, not aggressive ,, Always No after you Claude .|||There is no specific rule , however its safer to make a single line que early to avoid people having to cut in at the last moment.|||Normal practise is for cars to alternate when reaching the single line ie one from the left lane then one from the right lane, unfortunately there are a lot of bad selfish drivers out there .|||if heavy traffic - yes definatly, light traffic keep to the left lane
